Moving Forward Rather Than Looking Back: Finding Momentum in the Present

Dear Diary,

It is so dangerously easy to get caught looking in the rear-view mirror. When you live with chronic physical challenges like Cerebral Palsy and Endometriosis, your mind loves to play the comparison game: looking back at what your body used to do, replaying the things you wish had gone differently, or mourning timelines that didn't pan out.

But looking backwards doesn't build a future. Dwelling on what was—or what "could have been"—only steals the energy you need for today.

Moving forward doesn't require a dramatic leap or a grand, sweeping reinvention. More often than not, it is about giving yourself permission to start exactly where you are right now, with whatever energy you have in the tank.

Here are three mindset shifts that help me stop looking backwards and start moving forward:

1. Release Outdated Baselines

You cannot measure your worth today against a younger version of yourself or an able-bodied ideal. Honouring your body means accepting your present reality without judging it. When you stop comparing today's capacity to yesterday's, the burden of guilt lifts.

2. Lean Into Micro-Goals

Big ambitions can feel paralysing when energy is in short supply. Breaking life down into tiny, bite-sized tasks makes progress feel doable. A win isn't just finishing a massive project; a win is making the bed, jotting down a single creative idea, resting without self-blame, or celebrating that you simply showed up.

3. Focus on Who You Want to Be

The past is written, but the next page is blank. Choosing to move forward is about aligning with your values, nurturing your creative spark, and building a sanctuary of peace in your daily life. You don’t need anyone’s permission to reinvent your pace.

You are allowed to close the chapter on the past and quietly step into what's next.

Support & Community: If you are feeling stuck, carrying heavy emotional baggage, or navigating life with physical disability:

  • In the UK, you can reach out to Scope (scope.org.uk) for community forums and practical advice, or connect with Mind (mind.org.uk) and the Samaritans on 116 123 for compassionate emotional support.

  • If you are reading from outside the UK, please reach out to your local mental health charities and community support groups.

What is one small thing you can let go of today so you can walk into tomorrow a little lighter?
