Dear Diary,
September has arrived, and with it, a sense of relief that is almost physical. Outside, the leaves are beginning their slow turn, and there is a silent battle taking place between the remnants of Summer’s heat and the approach of Autumn’s chill. For me, this is the "Golden Transition."
Finding My "Optimal"
Currently, I am at what I call my "Optimal" state. The air has finally cooled enough that my internal thermostat isn't constantly hitting the red zone. The "August Melt" is behind me, and for a brief window, my body can cope with the average day without the crushing exhaustion of heat regulation.
I’m up early-ish, the kitchen is clear, and the coffee tastes better when there’s a slight nip in the air. This is the version of myself I love the most—the one who can move through the day with a bit more predictability. My "bandwidth" feels like it has a full charge for the first time in months. But as the captain of Life with Sweetestmoondust, I know that this window is as fleeting as the colour of the leaves.
The Shadow: Foresight and the "Stuck"
While I am enjoying this mobility and the rare "looseness" in my muscles, I am living with an acute awareness of the shadow. I know the speed at which the world will change. I’ve lived through enough cycles to know that once the true winter cold hits, I will be "stuck."
The cold is a different kind of siege for CP. It tightens the muscles, bites into the arthritis, and makes the lordosis feel like a heavy weight. Because I am in such a stable place now—having moved past those years of transition—I am using this optimal window for pre-winter foresight. I am not waiting for the first frost to realise I’m unprepared. I am prepping the vessel now while I have the energy to do it.
The Toolkit: Safety and Warmth
My preparation is a matter of tactical survival. I’m double-checking the essentials that keep the "Life with Sweetestmoondust" ship moving when the temperatures drop.
Central Heating: It’s been checked and is ready to go. It’s the baseline of my comfort.
Blankets: I’m ensuring my heavy, sensory blankets are clean and accessible. They aren't just for warmth; they are for grounding when the ADHD or the pain gets too loud.
The Heat Pad Strategy: I am stocking up on microwavable heat pads.
I have to be very clear here, diary: I never use hot water bottles. For someone with my spasticity and physical challenges, they are incredibly dangerous. The risk of a burst or a spill is a gamble I refuse to take with my skin and my safety. Microwavable pads are my non-negotiable alternative. They provide that deep, penetrating heat for my back and joints without the hazard.
Sovereignty in the Wait
There is a power in this kind of preparation. In the past, I might have felt a sense of dread about the coming winter, but now that I’ve reached this stable harbour, I feel a sense of sovereignty. I am "Be-ing who I want to be" by looking out for my future self.
I am finishing the laundry, clearing the kitchen, and setting up my links for the community. If I can help one other person avoid a dangerous hot water bottle or find the right blanket now, before the "stuck" begins, then the brand is doing its job.
A Note to the Global Community
Finding this balance here in the UK is a yearly ritual. But to my readers in China and the USA, I want to urge you: build your winter toolkit now.
Don’t wait until you’re already shivering or your muscles have already tightened into knots. Reach out to your local support and advocacy groups today. Ask them for recommendations on safe heating alternatives and local energy assistance. We are all on this voyage together, but we have to stock our own ports before the storm hits.
Moving into the Mist
As the sun sets on this first day of September, I feel ready. The poems are coming, Be Who You Want to Be is out there doing its work, and The Long Way Down is waiting for me in the quiet moments. The "Golden Transition" is here, and for once, I am not just surviving it—I am leading it.
❤
